A focus for one-to-one English lessons

English for engineers: explain your technical thinking.

You may know the technical terms but still struggle to connect the cause, impact and next step. This lesson focus helps you explain your work in English that your listener can follow.

Where this practice helps

This focus suits engineers and technology professionals who join international meetings, hand over projects or explain problems to nontechnical colleagues. Practice is adjusted to your level, with an emphasis on responding rather than memorizing a script.

  • Report test results and distinguish confirmed facts from possible causes.
  • Compare two options, explain the trade-offs and make a recommendation.
  • Clarify requirements, scope and deadlines, then check that both sides agree.

How you can practise in class

Start with a simplified work situation and explain what is happening. Then practise follow-up questions such as “What is the impact?” and “Why do you recommend this option?” Work on sentence structure, pronunciation and the order of your explanation, then try again in your own words.

You do not need company documents or confidential information. Use fictional names, approximate figures or a situation prepared by the teacher.

Try a simple explanation structure

Organize your explanation as observation → impact → next step. The example below describes an imaginary test situation; replace the details with your own.

The test failed when we increased the load.

This may delay the release, but we have not confirmed the cause yet.

Our next step is to reproduce the issue in a separate environment.

  • Avoid presenting a possible cause as a confirmed conclusion. Use may, might or we have not confirmed to show how certain you are.

Lesson format and next steps

This is a focus within the existing one-to-one English course, rather than a separate course. Begin with a 25-minute trial to explore your level and goals, then continue with 50-minute lessons. Your camera is optional, materials are provided and lesson notes support review afterward.
